Crikvenica

Welcome to Crikvenica, located on the northeastern edge of the picturesque Kvarner bay, one of the most naturally manifold parts of the eastern Adriatic coast.Considering the touristic and catering tradition which lasts for more than a century, and its extremely convenient geographical location (vicinity of Rijeka – Croatia’s greatest harbour and traffic junction, and of the airport on the island Krk), Crikvenica has deserved the attribute “The Gate of the Mediterranean” as one of the oldest touristic destinations in that region.

1412 princes Frankopan built a monastery near the medieval church and gave it to Paulist Fathers. That monastery, being the centre of culture and education of that age, contributed to the settlement and development of the harbour. The town had been given its name after ‘crikva’, the Croatian word for church, which has been kept to the present day.

The first tourists to visit Crikvenica came about a hundred years ago. They came for the reason of specific climatic and ecological conditions of Crikvenica, and not for leisure or recreation. 1906 Crikvenica became a health centre. Owing to this tradition and extraordinary natural characteristics Crikvenica has, to the present day, remained one of the best known centres of health tourism on the Adriatic.

Extraordinarily mild climatic conditions with more than 2500 sunny hours per year and a comfortable sea temperature of 27 ˚C, spotlessly clean air without harmful allergens and waste gasses, and crystal clear sea make Crikvenica attractive the whole year long, to visitors of all ages.

East- and westside are connected with a long promenade by the sea (“lungomare”), with a plenty of palms, pines, cypresses, rosemary, laurel and myrtle, which are characteristic Mediterranean plants.

Crikvenica is proud of its natural beaches, the diversity of which is evident in the multitude of pebble, stony and sandy beaches, that are the greatest treasure of the town. The main beach has been, for many years in a row, given the BLUE FLAG certificate, which symbolizes sea and shore purity and also a well-kept, secure and comfortable environment that is intended for holiday, leisure and recreation.

For active holiday and healthy life enthusiasts a multitude of sports are offered, both on mainland and at sea. There is also a possibility of providing adequate preparation training programmes  for professional sportsmen throughout the year.
Beach volleyball, table-tennis,mini golf, water ski, parachute tour, waterpolo, sailing, rowing and surfing are kinds of sports that can fulfill the needs of the most demanding guest on the beach. Besides, there are many tennis, basketball and handball courts and jet-ski and other ships to let. Adventure enthusiasts can enjoy paragliding, horse riding and scuba diving.

Crikvenica offers nightlife for all tastes – peaceful evenings walking by the sea, or dancing on a terrace, up to crazy nights in discoteques and caff`e bars. On special occasions the guests can enjoy national culture events. Culinary art and hospitality of the hosts guarantee pure enjoyment in top quality national dishes with special emphasis on health food, thereby not ignoring modern culinary trends.
